Phased return after being ill

It's been a shitty year healrhwise and I have just had 4 months off. Now back to work with a phased return over 4 weeks. Was told today I'll only be paid for the hours I do in my phased return. Or I can top up using my annual leave.
This just seems so bloody tight after I've tried so hard to get better/get back into work.
Is this normal?

It's a small (wasteful) charity btw - just feels crap to have been so ill and now finances are f*cked up too :(

Yes, perfectly normal.

Glad to hear you are back on your feet. Not a HR person but How much paid sick leave did you get and did you use all of what’s available in your policy? If so, then I think unfortunately it’s probably normal just to be paid for time worked? It’s really positive that they are facilitating phased return - my husband was given a week of half days and then expected to be back full time the following week which he couldn’t manage. He only got paid for the half days but didn’t have to take annual leave, it was just considered unpaid leave

Ah ok. Thanks for replies. Had 1 month sick pay and 3 SSP.

Yes, it’s very common.

Some places with paid sick leave will do it on a mix of sick pay and normal pay. Even some with paid sick leave won’t use it for a phased return so it’s annual leave or reduced pay.

If it helps, you should have the leave accrued in the four months you were off available to you as any holiday booked during that time should have been cancelled. Which might mean you’ve got annual leave you can use to reduce the pay impact.

@ScaryM0nstertthanks yes that's some thing I guess.

Yeah, normal at my place if you've exhausted the (admittedly fairly generous 6 months) sick leave. If you haven't used up the sick pay allowance then you would be paid.

I work for a financial services company and we only pay for the hours you work for a phased return. When I worked in property I got full pay for my phased return so I think it can vary greatly.
