I work for a large company. I’m going to need to take to take several weeks time off for immediate family illness. Although I have adequate untaken holiday left this year (2 weeks), which I wasn’t planning on taking , we all received notifications that it’s too late to request leave for the rest of this year.

I can’t afford to take unpaid leave. Can anyone advise on where I stand please?

Is it a child? Can someone else pick up the slack and care for the person?

Would social care be an option?

If you explain the situation, you may find that employer allows you to take your holiday. I would at least ask the question.

Are you a trade union member?

No not a child thankfully, an adult

Is it an immediate relative, e.g. husband? Would carers leave apply in this situation?

Start by explaining to your employer and see if they'll flex on it for your circumstances.
