Coffee place setting

Tomorrow afternoon I have been invited for a coffee place interview. Before you read anything else- I have been unemployed for more than a year!

Bit of background- I interviewed with this company 8 months ago. I did 2 rounds of interview- feedback was great and I was number 2 for them. Then another junior role came up 2 weeks ago and I applied. And therefore this coffee interview - which I feel is more for personality check?

So what’s the etiquette here - should I buy my coffee ahead of time scheduled or wait for my interviewer to arrive and then buy it together? I don’t want it to be awkward as to who pays for my coffee or I don’t want to be too eager to pay either. Or any other option.

I would definitely expect them to buy both coffees, as they’ll expense it presumably. My experience with casual ‘interview’ meetings as the the person interviewing always buys the drinks

They'll buy coffee, but if its makes you anxious then by all means get there early and buy a cold drink, then when they arrive and offer to get you coffee accept it. That's what I've always done. That way if they don't offer or you panic, just say you're happy with the drink you have. Say you got there early to look over your notes or something

Thank you both! Seems logical.

Yes, interviewee got both drinks when i've had this situation before. Good luck!

How did it go OP?

workdilemma1234 · 04/11/2025 19:08

It was very good. It was at a formal (order at the table) coffee shop. The senior interviewer came with a colleague and both were very warm and friendly. Seemed positive. Fingers crossed for their decision they said they will let me know tomorrow. 😊

Interviewee or interviewer?

Interviewer. A bit of a critical word to misspell on this thread, sorry!

Glad it went well OP, sounds very positive

Well done OP

I have to say I have never heard of such a thing and would hate this. I would be really really nervous and all put out. I'd probably spill my drink
