Just got turned down for ANOTHER job - starting to feel quite depressed now.

Don't really want any advice - just a good old moan! I lost my nice permanent job when DS was born, made redundant when the business was taken over and everyone in Bristol sent packing.

Found a maternity cover contract when DS was one and worked there for a year until March - they were hoping to extend but then the funding didn't come through.

so back on the job market and sending off applications right left and centre, but haven't had any interviews. just got turned down for another job and feeling a bit rubbish.

now, without sounding smug, I'm good at my job. I've always had excellent appraisals, everyone happy to give me a reference, lots of good feedback. I work hard on my applications, too.

So what's going wrong? Is it the 'mum of 2yo, likely to have another one soon' problem?

Feeling like I'm invisible. Sigh.

ah poor you LittleMy
think it's a very tough jobs market for mothers of young children
Keep trying!

LittleMyDancing · 06/06/2008 16:36

Thank you CatisSleepy! I'm beginning to think that I only got my last job because it was a short term contract so they didn't have to worry about me having another baby.

It's sad but true, isn't it? I sort of didn't believe it until now, but it really is stupidly hard getting a job as a mother.

I'm going for all things - overqualified, underqualified, and just right.

DP proof reads my applications and I've never had problems getting an interview before, without sounding smug again I think I write good applications. (I should do, I'm in communications!) But you're right, you can always do better so maybe I'll get someone else to read them as well.

As for knowing I'm a mother - it's the year gap in my experience that gives it away, if I put maternity leave then it's a dead giveaway, if I put nothing then they think I've been in prison....

must be incredibly frustrating for you LittleMy

you can't really 'spin' having been off on mat leave can you

wish I could give some useful advice!

The really annoying thing is....those people turning me down because they think I'm just going to have another baby....are dead right.

I do just want to have another baby.

LOL littlemy
but they don't know that do they?

LittleMyDancing · 06/06/2008 18:19

no - unless my subconscious is writing hidden messages in all the applications!

ho hum - never mind. maybe I'll get DP drunk and get him to agree to me being a SAHM
