1-1s with your manager. How often?

I've been working at the same company for nearly 18 months. I have 1-1s around once a month. I'm not sure it's enough. I can contact him on teams and he'll answer but dedicated 1-1s are only about once a month if I'm lucky. My last one was beginning of September for my objectives for the next 6 months.
I've recently discovered that others have weekly or more chats with him.
Should I be pushing for more?
He says he trusts me and I'm exceeding expectations so doesn't feel the need to check in as much but any worries to call him
I know he has my back.
What would you do?

1to1s for us are every six months. With chats about various work issues as and when (could be several times a day or only once a week - depending on what issues arise).

BingBongBish · 31/10/2025 23:30

Every six months here too.

But our line manager is really quite close to the team, so she's never left wondering what any of us are thinking 😁

TheThingsYouDoForLurve · 31/10/2025 23:32

Weekly but we WFH a lot and they are a good way of running through the various projects and a) updating each other and b) getting really helpful input. We also chat shit about telly, dogs, company gossip etc etc.

I enjoy them.

My manager likes to speak to me every week. It find it too much.
My team, I have planned 1:1 every other week with most of them. One has asked for weekly, so I suit her request. They all know they can ping me and we can have ad hoc calls whenever needed.

I think it depends on your industry/role etc. If you want more, ask for it.

Spudlover · 31/10/2025 23:32

I have fortnightly one to ones with my boss. I have one to ones with my team weekly, but I have fewer direct reports than she does.

Six months is crazy!

TheCurious0range · 31/10/2025 23:33

Every other month, months in between I have 2 to 1s with the only other colleague at my level with our joint line manager, that's plenty for me. Why do you need more? Are there other ways to fulfil whatever is missing

ObliviousCoalmine · 31/10/2025 23:38

I do 1:1s with the people I manage every 6 weeks. If I did them weekly I’d never have time to do any actual work?

They can message/call me whenever they want to though and I’ll make time for them.

Boxingshibes · 31/10/2025 23:38

I work independently as a trainer and have met my other trainers twice face to face in 18 months. I can go for weeks without talking on teams with another colleague. I also travel a lot and have had horrific travel/ hotels and had no contact from my manager to check in. I did have a very close colleague who called/ checked in when I was away. But he left 6 months ago.

In our organisation the expectation is fortnightly. I have a 1-1 fortnightly with my manager but also a three way with a colleague and our manager fortnightly too. Then I also have a 1-1 with the person I manage fortnightly too. I find it’s good to have that space set aside to talk, sometimes there’s not much to say and we finish up quickly but I do value the time, in both directions.

Wincher · 01/11/2025 00:12

In answer to your question OP, I find there are lots of things that I don’t like to bother my manager with but are quite helpful to talk through when we meet. Though tbh I think monthly is probably reasonable, especially if they manage more than 5-6 people.

IDontHateRainbows · 01/11/2025 00:12

Fortnightly is the holy grail. Weekly is too frequent for me.

Boxingshibes · 01/11/2025 00:16

I do understand that he has a number of people he line manages but I question why some get more and just because I deemed capable I get less. I'm not talking about much but maybe a 15 min check in weekly/ fortnightly would actually make me feel valued/seen?
