No. I they can see that your device has been connected to the WiFi but they can’t see into the device

They can see "into" the device. E.g. they could see you were on Facebook for 30 minutes and used a load of data.

NotForTheMoneyandNotForTheApplause · 24/10/2025 19:33

You can definitely see which websites are accessed on a work device according to my my work but not what websites you look at if you use one of your own devices on the WiFi

I don't know if they are lying to trick the staff though

Depends on the monitoring tools - we’ve got pretty advanced ones and can see the URLs visited but not the content of those pages. It’s all encrypted so we can only see who was looking at a certain page if it flags as one of the big ‘nos’ (porn, gambling and illegal content basically) otherwise we don’t bother. Policies will vary however, I’d expect banks etc to be much more strict

If you use your own device with a vpn then they can’t see anything

Yes. Sorry. I didn’t explain myself very well. I was trying to say that they can see what the device has connected to (FB etc) but can’t see what was on the device screen.

ThisCanFuckOffToo · 24/10/2025 19:58

God I hope not. I’ve been googling dubious things and using chatGPT on work WiFi for-ever.

I'm a sysadmin. I've had to provide logs of what people were accessing for HR investigations in the past. They can see what you're connecting to. They might not see what's on your screen, but thry can see which websites.

And can see what search terms you use.
Depends on what security system they use.
Best option is to assume nothing on a work device is ever private.

Kimura · 25/10/2025 12:48

If they've got keyloggers installed they can see every button you've pressed 👀

Get ready to explain your 500 searches for 'Idris Elba topless' to HR 😅

AllyCart · 25/10/2025 13:23

Are you talking about accessing sites using a device provided by your employer, or are you using your own personal device attached to the employer's Wifi?

GelatoForMe · 25/10/2025 13:36

My own phone on their WiFi...I'm not scared as to what access, but haven't done this in a previous job, so wanted to make sure thar noone cab read my emails in my own email...that sort of thing

I access email, news or light hearted womens blogs. Nothing sexual or weird. Just needed to know how private it is

Many years ago I was listed in the top 5 in an organisation of nearly 1,000 for using social media in work time. I was pally with the head of HR and I guess because of how busy I was with work, he believed me when I said I just have it logged in all day long. So they can definitely keep track of these things!
