Is there anything I can do?

Hello there, I'm just looking for advice on a situation at work. They are re-jigging how we all work, to make the company more efficient and as part of this I have been assigned to a team that didn't exist before. I will be given a new contract to sign at some point as its a change of role.

I was put forward for this role as I am apparently a good fit for it, however, it is doing all the things I hate, for example its client facing. I hate this type of work because I'm socially awkward, go red etc. I have always made it clear in my monthly and annual reviews that this is the sort of thing I am not interested in.

I was told on a Friday and asked to give an answer by the Monday. It was worded as though it was uncertain if there would still be a job for me if I said no. I tried to get as much information as possible about what it would entail but was told very little and not that it would be client facing. I tentatively agreed to give it a go but a few weeks in and I absolutely hate it. I'm completely overwhelmed, there is little support and I feel sick all weekend and every morning at the thought of work.

I dont want to sign my new contract but equally I still need a job to pay my mortgage! Do I have any rights at all? I'm a good worker, I work hard, I put my head down and (normally!) just get on with it. I've only ever had positive feedback about my work so I don't think its a deliberate attempt to get me to leave.

Thank you in advance for any advice anyone can give me.

This sounds an awful situation for you OP. Yes, you will have writes, others will be better placed than me to advise on these.

If you have always had great feedback and have see you as 'a good fit' for the new role, then maybe you are, you just don't realise it. I do understand how overwhelming a sudden shift to client facing is, could you take a step back in your head, reframe your mind to embrace this and set yourself small challenges to get through each hour, morning, day? You may start to enjoy it and find it rewarding.
