What should I do?

I am currently pregnant. At work, I was speaking with a senior male team member and he asked if I’d be breastfeeding. I gave a non committal “we’ll see”, and he continued the conversation avidly, pushing that breastfeeding is far better for the baby, that my own wants, needs or challenges should not be as important as my baby, and that formula feeding is like giving them junk food. I had to defend my position on it repeatedly, and there were really judgemental undertones. It felt really judgemental. The whole interaction was really upsetting and demeaning.

Had anyone experienced anything like this? I’m unsure what my rights are or how to proceed. I am waiting to hear from HR

This is completely inappropriate and none of his business. You’ve done the right thing by raising it with HR.

There are people like this out there, but mostly in maternity services or baby groups!

What an odd conversation at work. However you may find that other work colleagues ask similarly intrusive questions. I had one who asked if my baby was planned!

In future just shut any such questions or conversations down as quickly as possible. It’s fine to say that’s a personal matter and you don’t want to discuss it.

Additionally, it’s completely up to you how you feed your baby. Make your own choice based on your preferences and your situation. Your baby will be fine either way.
