I feel like I’m stuck in the ruttiest rut work wise at the minute. It’s making me miserable and adding to financial stress in a big way.
I am mid-30s and watching a lot of friends from uni do well while I’m stuck earning well below average in a job with no progression.
A little about me - I have a masters degree in English literature (I know waste of time lol). Started working life as an English teacher but left this to work as a well-being practitioner at a non NHS mental health service for adolescents. I now work there as a middle manager on the operations side. Pay is low 30s. Recently applied for next step up (Sr manage managemt) and turned down for an external candidate.
So this is how I’m feeling
- there is no real opportunity for promotion at my current job
- I want to progress and do well. I am intelligent and hard working. I’ve managed a team, I work in the front line of a challenging service and I’m good at it
- I seem to have friends with jobs called things like ‘development manager’, ‘improvement manager’, ‘project something something’ making a fortune with the same degree as me.
- I want to leave my job but I’m not qualified to do anything other than teach
is there some kind of adult career service I can access? A job coach type thing?
I’m a skilled project manager/people manager type person but no idea how to break into any kind of industry.
