Temporary contract for local authority

I'm currently on a fixed term contract at a local authority aswell as 2 of my other colleagues. We are due to finish in 6 months however none of us have been told we are getting kept on and all its very vague despite other permanent members of the team assuring us not to panic.Has anyone had any experience of this in local sector? Is it normal ? Am I right to be anxious. Should I start looking elsewhere ? Advice please.

I work in local government it's normal you may not know until month before if the contracts are being extended, they will be trying to source more funding for the role if they are ended . In mine my contracts are only being extended if service is vital as the money is just not there .

Agree with the above, you won't hear anything for a few months yet and don't assume you will definitely be kept on as budgets are so tight just now.

Agree with others, it just depends if /when the funding gets approved

Very normal x

Yes if you finish at the end of financial year next years decisions are likely not made yet. I have 2 people contracted until then and will be trying to give them as much info as possible as early as possible but my hands are tied until decisions are made higher up.

V normal. I'd expect there may be some inkling after Christmas at the earliest..

Thanks everyone. The role I do is definitely one that is needed in this economy so hopefully we do get kept but would everyone suggest applying to other jobs in the meantime?

Of course you need to apply for other jobs. It would be very passive to just sit and wait and see what happens

Plus sometimes if a really valued member of temporary staff gets a job offer it can speed up the budget approval process
