I’m in a job which I enjoy, I’m part time and although it’s only slightly above minimum wage I can enjoy the day and forget about work when I leave. I haven’t been there that long (8months ish) there is only 2 in our team, me and a high level manager. The high level manager who had 20 years experience on the system has just gone on sick and not sure when she will be returning, it’s a specialised system the whole organisation uses. Suddenly it feels like I am out of my depth and getting pulled in all different directions with technical questions that I can’t just google, I feel like looking for something else, anyone any advice?

Assuming you don’t want any change/progression yourself, say ‘I don’t know’ when you don’t know. Redirect the questions to your manager’s manager and raise the knowledge gap with them.

You'll have to explain to whoever's above her that you need training.

Why on earth would you throw the towel in without doing this?

Thankyou for responding :) i will maybe start making a list of the type of questions and areas im lacking knowledge on and then organise a meeting with her manager to explain

There’s no one to train me?

Then they'll find someone to train you.

They can't expect you to use a system you don't fully understand.

Sounds like you don’t like the idea of work and are looking for reasons to leave

absurd that the first thought is to quit your job.

It’s crazy to expect you to fill the tasks that the high level manager who is now off sick did! If it wasn’t part of your job when she was there (assuming why you haven’t yet been trained on it??) then I would just be completely honest and say you’d love to learn the system but need training - the company may have a super user in another part of the company, or have to bring in an external trainer to bring you up to speed. There is nothing wrong with being honest about your development needs esp as they should know you haven’t used it before!

Hi, yes you are exactly right, my manager did the high level tasks and is on 4 x my salary although I understand she will be paid partly that due to being my manager. The higher level tasks involve decision making etc also
