Walking back into a ****storm tomorrow

I've been away on holiday for a week, back in the office tomorrow. There was a bit of a crisis happening before I went so I wrapped up as much as I could and did a decent handover. It's all blown up, my boss (CEO) has been sending furious emails and I've spent the week keeping a face on for DH and the DC while lying awake for hours at night thinking about it. My team have handled it like troopers but have also been messaging me and have set up a meeting first thing tomorrow before CEO gets in so I'm not blindsided, bless their thoughtfulness.

I'm going in extra early to clear my desk before my team get in, in case I'm getting fired. I don't know how I'm going to hold it together TBH. I've told DH that it's bad, but not how bad. He just said it's a bank holiday, don't worry about it until tomorrow. I'm tired, my holiday was ruined and I just want to go in and get it over with.

Good luck OP!

Also - think how a man would react.

Agree. A lot of them would be angry at being put in the situation where they had to make a decision and that was now being questioned.

is the ceo mad at you or the situation? It’s hard but it can help not to personalise it. Also the “no one dies, everyone goes home” mantra sometimes helps.

luckylavender · 26/08/2025 08:55

Good luck OP. Keep us posted.

Kate8889 · 26/08/2025 08:55

Good luck! Either way you're going to be ok!

Bestfootforward11 · 26/08/2025 08:57

You did the best you could. I know that sinking feeling well. Thinking of you today. Good luck.

travailtotravel · 26/08/2025 08:59

With the information you had at the time - if he went away without giving you all the info you needed to cover, this is on him. Don't absolve yourself of responsibility (never a good look) but recognise yourself that you did what you knew how to do with the information you had. Keep repeating if necessary - if I'd had that information, if I was aware of that situation, had I been advised of the position on X I would have been able to do Y.

We're with you!

Absentmindedsmile · 26/08/2025 08:59

I don’t quite understand how so many people are giving out so much advice, when we have very little detail from OP. Without the full context, actions and consequences, it makes no sense to give any useful advice.

Solidarity maybe, comfort. But particular employment / legal advice, questionable with such little information.

Anyway , good luck OP whatever happens today. x

A671090 · 26/08/2025 08:59

These things are rarely as bad as you think - sending positive vibes today

Chicaontour · 26/08/2025 09:00

Best of luck OP, there is very little that is completely unfixable, You made a decision based on the information available that you had at that time. I made a minor boo boo last year when i first started in a new role and I got a master class on how to deal with mistakes with graciousness and how to support your team. Its something that I will try and model going forward. Rooting for you and i am so sorry that this impacted your holiday so much. Absolute sickner.

Ilady · 26/08/2025 09:05

X

Badgerandfox227 · 26/08/2025 09:05

Best of luck for today OP, hoping everything goes ok xx

Cherrysoup · 26/08/2025 09:05

Hope it gets smoothed over. I hate that sword of Damocles hanging over you feeling.

Mischance · 26/08/2025 09:07

You kept the holidaying CEO informed of the situation. He/she had the choice to intervene.
You have not had a holiday! ... you have had a week of worry with people badgering you!

Hold your head up high, be clear about your reasoning at the time based on the info you had and do not creep in apologetically!

lostmywayrightnow · 26/08/2025 09:07

Thinking of you Op this morning and wishing you lots of luck. I am so sorry this ruined your holiday.

@Rainallnight and @Theextraordinaryisintheordinary and others give good advice, which I expect is already part of your game plan. Stand your ground, write as much as you can down of everything that happened, before you go in, for your own use. Be as positive as you can about finding solutions. Dont for a minute allow yourself to blame yourself. Keep focus on the work ahead and see how things play out over the next few days. Truth always outs in the end. Nothing is more important than your health.

Best of luck today.

Just to add...you will obviously be heavily scrutinised over what you did/didn't know and did/didn't do, and that's only right. Try not to be defensive, due process needs to be followed to establish exactly who and what was responsible, the learnings and action needed. Demonstrate you fully understand this and full willingness to take part in what sounds like an inevitable investigation. Just be honest, humble and proactive, without pointing any fingers. It's all you can do.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 26/08/2025 09:09

Good luck, I hope you still are safely in a job at the end of today.

PurpleChrayn · 26/08/2025 09:10

Good luck today!

ThatCyanCat · 26/08/2025 09:12

Good luck, OP. It sounds as though you made the same call anyone would have made in the circumstances.

I love 'never waste a good crisis' i will be borrowing that!

Me too, excellent phrase! OP, you're team are behind you which suggests that you are respected and trusted. Wishing you the very best of luck today.

Eventmrs · 26/08/2025 09:22

Hold your head up and own this shit.
You did what you did based on the known evidence. Hind sight is a great think to have, but do not apologise and look weak.

Go in and find out how your team handled it and what the CEO was doing. Did he/she just fire off random emails to you or did they help with fighting the fire.

You are not a one person band and have a team behind you, to cover when you are not available.
Do not be defensive, state the facts and also stick up for yourself that you are allowed a personal life.

Go get them!

BitOutOfPractice · 26/08/2025 09:23

Good luck op. I’m rooting for you. Head held high, go and face It head on.

And yes, your CEO sounds like a dick

IwanttotakeyoutoaNailaBar · 26/08/2025 09:23

I’ve just opened my emails to find a shit storm also.
Luckily I didn’t know in advance so it’s not ruined my leave.

Op the time passes regardless of whatever happens good or bad. It will be tonight, tomorrow, next month, 2026. Opposite of “mindfulness in the moment “ stuff. Just keep thinking this too will pass. Good luck.

HelloHattie · 26/08/2025 09:28

What a shame to have spoilt your holiday. I hope utd not as bad as it seems.

StampOnTheGround · 26/08/2025 09:30

Remember OP, it’s just a job and they’d replace you in a heartbeat if you suddenly left. I can’t understand someone saying you should have your laptop on and be made available during a holiday, we work to live not live to work - we all need a break. Everybody is replaceable, I don’t think anyone should be in a job where they can’t completely switch off.

I’ve come back to shitstorms, but even if someone tried to message me while I was off, I wouldn’t even get involved. Family time is the most important.

Hope everything goes okay for you today, good luck!
