Changing career

Any teachers who’d be willing to share how they’ve successfully changed careers? I’m happy to study further, but it has to be something I can do alongside working, and I keep coming up against a brick wall. I’m a single income household so pay for everything myself. I’d be interested in other public service roles. Would really like to do speech and language or occupational therapy, but the courses are full time. I’ve looked into the civil service. Social work has a good training scheme but I need to research whether I could choose to do adult social care etc. Any advice or ideas are welcome.

I’d look into teacher of deaf students or teaching visually impaired students.

Local councils employ staff in education services, children’s services, and adult social care where your classroom experience is anasset.

The Step Up to Social Work programme is a funded, full-time but paid training route (12–14 months, bursary included). Or some councils sponsor staff through social work apprenticeships, meaning you could potentially specialise in adult social care while earning.

Probation service: Training roles crop up from time to time.

Education welfare officer / family liaison roles: Often based with local authorities

Counselling- you can train for a Level 2 certificate part time online.

My ds left teaching to become a welfare officer. There has been a boom in home schooling and councils have been slow on checking in with this. I think there will be more of it in the comingyears.

I think you can do a speech and language therapy apprenticeship now, where you can earn as you train. Might be worth looking in to?

I have emailed the three trusts closest to me about this, but no joy.
