At Risk Of Redundancy

Was informed yesterday that my job is at risk of redundancy. This isn't part of a bigger exercise - my job is the only one at risk.

Reason given is financial performance of the business. We recorded a profit in month of July after 15 straight months of losses and have just secured a 24% price rise with our biggest customer. August is also likely to be profitable.

The tasks which I do will not disappear. I believe they will be shared among 3 of my colleagues who are employed by other legal entities in the group. The group is effectively run as a single economic entity. There is no word of putting the 4 of us in a pool and scoring us with the lowest scorer being made redundant.

I have 2 separate pieces of strong evidence that one of these colleagues has been prepped to take over my role which is at odds with the "no decision has been taken, we need to consult with you" story I have been given.

Real story is probably that my boss doesn't like me and that he waited until a Director with whom I had an excellent working relationship retired before punting me.

I don't want to stay in this role but would keen to understand how strong a case I would have for unfair dismissal.

I would start a new thread with a title something like ‘needing advice on unfair dismissal’ - you might get people along who can advise that way.

Sorry you’re going through this, it does sound very unfair.

How long have you been there?

and there’s nothing wrong with training anyone which overlaps another person’s job

Well that would irrelevant to the OP given at this stage the op has been advised her position is “at risk of redundancy”

Neither of which is going to give the response the OP wants!

It’s not irrelevant at all, given that the OP is asking if she could possibly have a future case. Have you never thought ahead about potential threats in your life and attempted to prepare yourself?

So now there are two identical threads on the same board.
<slow clap>

What’s with the attitude? You aren’t in charge of what people worry about or post. If you’re that worried about a duplicate thread I’m sure you know where the report button is.

@Othersnotsomuch and @CantHoldMeDown does either of you fancy pitching in with some advice and support for OP on their thread?

What are the roles that the four of you do? Are they the same? If the four of you do exactly the same job at the same grade I would have thought all should be included in the pool, although I’m not sure how much the different legal entities impacts on that.

As far as I can tell the “no decision” concept is always a bit of a red herring particularly when there are a small number of roles involved. They will have already made the decision about the organisation they want and they are allowed to do that. It’s not a consultation about whether they should be making job reductions at all, so the company performance is irrelevant. The consultation is meant to be about considering other alternatives to redundancy, but if the role is going and there are no other reasonable alternative roles available it’s a done deal in reality.

It's hard at the moment. Unemployment is rising since RR disastrous budget adding more NICs for employers.
