Moving into TECH board/ advisory roles. Do you have any tips?

Hi all,
I’m hoping to pick your brains. I’m a long-time poster but have NC’d for this. I’ve been in senior roles in the UK for over a decade, mainly in B2B tech. My background’s a mix of strategy consulting and leadership in high-growth companies (think AI/SaaS), with a lot of experience in scaling internationally, driving growth and helping companies through big change.

I’m now looking to get my first proper board or advisory role in the tech sector, with the aim of building up a portfolio over time. I’ve been looking at platforms like Connectd, Nurole and Women on Boards, and also wondering if governance training (like the IoD or FT NED Diploma) is required before jumping in.

For anyone who’s done this I’d love to know:

  1. How did you land your first role?
  2. Any platforms, networks or programmes you’d actually recommend?
  3. Did you start with unpaid/equity roles, and if so, how did you make the leap to paid ones?
  4. Anything you wish you’d known before you started?

I’m happy to do the work and expand my network. I just want to make sure I’m focusing on the right things from the start.

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences you can share!
