How many interview questions in a job interview are too many? I got asked 21 for a part time 9 month maternity cover role recently. Not a senior or head of type job either.

Unless 20 of them were a quiz or one word answers that’s cuckoo bananas. 3-5 decent length ones with probing is ample.

Wimby · 03/08/2025 21:31

We do about 10-12.

3-5 is nowhere near enough!

we have about 15 I think on our interview form…. we can be a bit flexible with it.

I had an interview last week, 2 ice breakers that were not scored then 4 competency questions that were scored.
21 is OTT.

tulippa · 04/08/2025 05:53

We do six competency based questions at my workplace as well as a 'what's drawn you to this role' type one.

Zempy · 04/08/2025 05:55

We do a task then nine questions.

We have to do minimum of 6 maximum of 8. 21 is crazy!

Edited to add, they are from a set list that you choose from that HR have approved. If you want an additional question that you have made up it has to be run past HR first.

How long do your interviews last? Like 3-5 solid competency questions last an hour plus the fluff either side about fit etc

Are your questions much shorter and more conversational or do you just interview for ages?
