Submitting formal complaint

I’m putting in a grievance against my manager. They’re an awful bully, systematically picking on people to keep them in line. Lots of people have left over the last couple years. I’m like a boiled frog, I didn’t realise how bad it was until I talked to friends about it. My union have supported me.

I have no doubt that I’m completely justified so why do I feel so awful about doing this?

It’s scary because you’re standing up against someone who shouldn’t have gotten away with treating people unprofessionally.

You’re right. I don’t know how it’s going to turn out.

I would advise caution when considering a formal grievance as you need clear documented evidence. It cannot just be a matter of hearsay or conflicting accounts. Such claims against managers are very common and also very common for them to be open to interpretation. The vast majority go unresolved and leaves the memory of you having got involved in a dispute.

Other staff leaving does not necessarily indicate a deeper issue unless there is a clear record of concerns being raised.

In situations like this especially with redundancies becoming more common it is often wiser to focus on moving forward rather than getting drawn into disputes.

I am a union rep and have taken a grievance out for the same thing.

You need to think about what you want from this, for instance:

  • a different manager?
  • an apology?
  • changes to the work process?
  • reporting changes (ie there is oversight of your interactions)?

And then, how realistic is it that the company going to make that happen if you win.

Good luck.
