“You’ll hear back by Friday..”

Well, here we are 5:15pm on Friday and I haven’t heard back. I interviewed for a job I really wanted 2 weeks ago. On Monday they emailed to say I’d have an answer by Friday.

Unfortunately I also interviewed for another role 3 weeks ago, they said I’d hear back the following Monday, but I never did. I even emailed to chase up and never had a response.

Feeling completely disheartened at the moment, how difficult is it to send a regret email.

Why not ring them up / email and say 'i haven't heard, if you offered I would accept'?

My guess is they are waiting for 1st preference to get back to them.
(Or decision makers haven't had time to meet yet.)

The reason they emailed me on Monday was because I’d chased them up once to ask if there were any updates on the recruitment process, I would feel a bit desperate chasing twice!

Once a friend was waiting and was told she would hear back by the end of the week, but the interviewer had had a terrible accident and was told this the week after. You just never know what has happened. Good luck OP.

Urgh, so rude when this happens. Reflects badly on the organisation. No a lot you can do.

Bufftailed · 19/07/2025 10:53

So frustrating. They are probably waiting for a candidate to confirm. Write them off. Sorry

theactual · 19/07/2025 13:58

Thanks everyone. It’s just the false promises that get me. I’ve just been made redundant and am particularly desperate which doesn’t help. Onto the next..

Fingers crossed for you OP

I would email on, say Tuesday. They said Friday, so it's not like you're overstepping. If you haven't got the job you don't need to worry about offending them.

Edited to add...If you've had two near job offers it's only a matter of time before a real one comes through OP. Best of luck

I've been there before and just recently, no advice just sympathy that it happens all the time. Why can't people overestimate how long it'll take them to get back so they don't make promises they can't keep? It's dreadful. Good luck, anyway!

jf1992x · 19/07/2025 21:33

Yes I would say it’s because they’re waiting to hear back from their first choice!

theactual · 21/07/2025 14:12

You were all correct - I chased up this morning to be told they had chosen to go with another candidate. Which is fine - I just would've rather not spent the weekend wondering. Onto the next..!
