In my friend's department teams are usually made up of 1-2 juniors, 1-2 middle managers and sometimes a senior manager, with all teams overseen by the department head.
He was in the middle in a team of 3. His manager has now been promoted to a role outside the team. The junior has been moved sideways into another team leaving him as the only person left in his team.
He's been told there's a recruitment freeze but when they do hire again it will be for his team.
For context he's had some informal negative feedback in the past and heard some Chinese whispers about someone in senior management questioning his abilities.
However, he believes his boss when they make these changes sound positive and when they say his team will grow in the future.
For me it rings alarm bells and I think he's being set up to be the next victim of cost cutting and he should start looking for a new job.
What would you read into it?
