I am looking to change jobs possibly some night work.
i have two children 14 and 18 .
what age can you leave them on there own . I know the 18 year old is old enough . If they are there should I be ok with the 14

What times would they be left between?

MsDDxx · 30/06/2025 17:24

Will the 18 year old be at home with the 14 year old? If so I’d say that was completely fine. I’m not sure I’d leave a 14 year old all night.

Alltheoldpaintings · 30/06/2025 17:29

If the 18 year old will be home that’s fine.

If the 14 year old would be home alone I think that depends on their level of maturity/anxiety/how much you trust them.

The 18 yr old can be responsible for the 14 yr old

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 30/06/2025 17:33

Not fair to make the 18yo responsible for the 14yo

EdisinBurgh · 30/06/2025 17:34

This sounds fine to me.

Do you have any reliable neighbours in case of an emergency?
how far from home will you be?

Not easy but I’m sure all will be ok. You have to work. Good luck!

As long as the 18 yo can be trusted to stay in, I think that's fine.
But unreasonable to expect them to stay in every night, or regularly at the weekend though.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 30/06/2025 17:48

Legally you'd be fine there's no lower age limit but you'd have a problem if something happened and they were deemed not capable themselves. Though obviously, the main worry is them keeping themselves safe and you'd therefore left them at risk. But it really depends on your children and their maturity, behaviours and the relationship between them. Would your 18 yo be 100% guaranteed to not go out? Would the 14 yo be able to take instruction from the 18 year old? Only you really know if you could trust them and if they'd be happy to be left.

I would do it as the occasional one-off type thing, but not on a regular basis.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 30/06/2025 17:55

Would your 14 yo get themselves up for school?
