Giving notice advice

Hoping someone will be able to give me some advice on the best way to handle this, I currently work in a school two days a week.. it’s not been the easiest of months and i recently applied for a new job that i didn’t think I would get. I had an interview today and have been offered the job which i’m very happy about. However i know this is going to come as a complete shock to my current role (there’s been hints and they know i’ve been unhappy but they definitely see me as someone to just put up with it despite me raising a few concerns).
The new employer has asked for my references so they can contact them asap, i only work Monday and Tuesdays so i won’t see my current manager until Monday. My plan was to tell my employer that i am leaving at the end of term on Monday, do i ask the new employer not to contact my references until next week or do i ask my current employer for a telephone call this week to explain?
I don’t want to be unreasonable or upset anyone!
Hope this makes sense
Thank you ☺️

Employers will be used to getting reference requests, it won’t upset them

Personally I would tell them by phone call and to expect a reference. It’s not going to change the fact you are leaving.
