Is it time to leave?

I’ve been in my job 5 years. Have always had really good reviews and given lots of extra responsibilities. I got a pay rise after I pointed out people doing less were being paid more. This was 3 years ago. No promotion or opportunity to move. Is it time to leave? Does anybody get promoted anymore?

The only promotion I could get is my manager’s job, and I wouldn’t do it, so I just do my job and I’m happy.

You can have a look around but the job market isn’t great at the moment.

I never understood this....why do people think a promotion is guaranteed? If no one above leaves ..where are they promoting you too?

Every decent pay rise and seniority change I've had, has been because I've changed companies. Same with everyone I know.

Along with promotion usually incurs increasing pay, so many companies just don’t have the money spare. Where both my adult DS works, there’s been quite a few redundancies, hardly any promotions and very small pay rises.

Do you have an appraisal anytime soon? Or could you approach your manager to say you’re dissatisfied with career prospects and are thinking about leaving?

We had mass lay offs and I heard the promos I put in (as I was one of the ones laid off) didn’t happen and neither did the market adjustment. People at the top of their grades who were key talent got nothing. Business is not great at the minute so you’d need to look for another role to get promoted. I was lucky and got a job pretty quickly but others laid off at the same time or last year are still struggling to get something.
