How can I reply when my co-workers ask how much my car is?

I've been asking my co-workers lately what car makes they'd recommend. I bought a used car a few weeks ago and I should really let them know what I bought and that I bought one! However, I know they'll want to know how much I spent on it and I don't want to let them know and I don't have to tell them either! What can I say when they ask how much I spent? 🤷

I never ask anyone anything! 😉

Except what car they recommend

Needmorelego · 15/06/2025 17:44

I know zilch about cars so it's not a conversation I could contribute too - but isn't that all it is - a conversation.
A chat about cars.
What's so secret?

DwarfBeans · 15/06/2025 17:47

@user1471867483 how much did it cost? Are you embarrassed you spent a little or a lot? Bit weird expecting advice from them and then acting like this.

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 15/06/2025 17:52

I think it's a bit odd to ask their advice then refuse to tell them what it cost, people talk about this sort of thing at my work all the time. Some have old bangers, some have brand new performance cars, some pay cash, some use finance, it's just office chat.

ruffler45 · 15/06/2025 17:54

Deflect. Too much. I'll be living on beans on toast for months. How much did you pay for yours?

This...as its none of their business..

Itsawildridealright · 15/06/2025 18:01

I think it's a bit weird to be so secretive too 🤔 I'm the kind of person who wouldn't have qualms about asking that sort of question but would always frame it as "do you mind my asking how much...?!" With a tone and expression that conveys I know it's a bit cheeky to ask and wouldn't mind if they said "yes I do!' 😂

It's just not the kind of info I personally would mind sharing myself 🤷‍♀️ as PPs have said, are you embarrassed of the cost? If so, why?!

CuarloDeFonza · 15/06/2025 18:01

Just tell them if they ask, who really cares? What are they going to do with this highly unique information, absolutely nothing. Unless you suddenly found £40k and bought a Porsche, nobody will bat an eye lid. Nobody really cares about anything, not really. Everybody has their one life, issues and concerns.

Tillow4ever · 15/06/2025 18:30

I find it a bit odd that you don’t want me o tell them that, almost in an attention seeking way - I don’t know if that’s your intention. Why seek them out to tell them you bought it if you then will refuse to answer any natural questions that might come up?

but if it does, just laugh and say you can’t tell them or they’ll be an accessory to the steal you got it for.

user1471867483 · 15/06/2025 18:31

Thank you everyone. Think I'll just forget telling them I even got one. I'm so shy and timid in the workplace too 😔.
Again, thank you for all who contributed xx

I don't see why you just can't say if you've already been discussing it.

THEP0PE · 15/06/2025 18:37

I don’t understand.

Why do you care if they know how much it is. People can look up the car anyway and get a rough estimate.
what are you worried about exactly?

IReallyLoveItHere · 15/06/2025 18:41

I think this is a pretty much acceptable question. Maybe not phrased as 'how much'.

Car prices aren't very variable, same year and model will be pretty similar prices.

If they put your registration number into a valuation website they'll get a reasonable approximation.

But no you don't have to tell them. You can tell them to mind their own business, or laugh and say too much, or any other phrase you like to deflect.

Why are you so shy and timid at work?..if it's some form of 'imposter syndrome' stop this at once. You have earned the right to be there and working. No one is better than you.

Moveoverdarlin · 15/06/2025 18:42

OP: Oh yeah I bought a new car in the end guys! I went for a Volvo XC40.

Jane: Oh nice! How much did you spend on that?

OP: Well I got quite a good deal, so didn’t spend as much as I planned and they gave me a fair price on my old car that I part exchanged.

Jane: So how much was it?

OP: Well they were doing some good deals and it’s the old model so it wasn’t too bad.

Just waffle and don’t say a price, they’ll soon get the message.

TomatoSandwiches · 15/06/2025 18:44

If they ask how much tell them " 5 magic beans "

crumblingschools · 15/06/2025 18:54

How could you have asked for recommendations if you didn't give an idea of budget?

HotCrossBunplease · 15/06/2025 18:56

“I prefer not to say”.

CandyCane457 · 15/06/2025 19:32

I can’t ever imagine caring enough to ask someone how much their car cost.
But if they do ask, could you not just…tell them?
