Interview - Embarrassed

Sickness bug the day of the interview, threw up on the way to the interview. Didn't want to cancel as they were seeing loads of people. Thought it would be good experience either way.

I am in the role currently so lots of experience to draw upon. Only I didn't, I used examples from old roles and completely froze when asked the basic questions.

Got feedback afterwards and it's just embarrassing, going from top in the interview last time (contact role) to near the bottom this time (permanent role).

Just feeling meh as I now have to train up the new person on the team. I also have people asking how I got on and I have been ignoring their texts. Thanks for listening.

You weren't well, so it's not surprising you didn't do yourself justice in the interview. That doesn't take away from the fact that it's useful experience for you. It might in the long run turn out for the best - another opportunity might come along that's even better than this one for you.

People texting - I'd just reply lightly 'No luck for me this time 🙁" or similar. They're asking because they care about you, not because they really care about the outcome of the interview, and it'll all be forgotten in a matter of weeks.

If it's any comfort, I recently applied for a job that I am essentially doing anyway and didn't even get an interview!

Just tell the people asking that you half expected to do badly as you had a sickness bug so weren't at your best but that it was good experience so.....

Cancel next time. Lesson learnt.

What good will this do? I’d think oh great your brought a sickness bug into a busy interview day.

You should’ve rearranged! I was sick for an interview a couple of months ago and they just rearranged to a week or so later. I’m glad I did because I got the job, and I wouldn’t have if I’d gone sick. Also who doesn’t stay at home with a sickness bug!

Yes agree. Hopefully won’t be a next sick time, but if there is, just be honest and ask to reschedule. It’s in their interest as well since they will want to make sure they got the best person. It’s very rare they need the successful person to start immediately and I’m pretty certain most companies can factor in a few more days to the decision making process.

When I saw the title and started reading I thought you took ill or were sick in the interview or something. Honestly you should have cancelled. Firstly because you had a sickness bug and it isn’t fair to pass that around. Secondly they could have rearranged for a time or date when you felt better and could think straight. I don’t think you need to be embarrassed for not doing the best interview. Maybe feel a little relief for not giving everyone your bug though!

I had this same thing and it was horrendous, I’m still not over the experience despite it being about a year ago and I’m in a better role now 🙈

WooTangLang33 · 08/06/2025 18:22

Thanks! They kept saying they wanted to get the interviews done in those 3 days and were inundated with applications so I doubted they would rearrange (lots of interviewers and tasks).

I kept my distance re the sickness bug but yes it wasn't my finest moment.

I was rubbish. I got interview feedback and things to work on for next time.

Thanks everyone, will try and stop cringing and try again at some point.
