just got a job rejection with that statement within it.

What chance do I have in this current climate? Everyone is being made redundant and competing for the same jobs. My area of expertise is one that has been particularly hard hit of late so clearly everyone with my type of skill set is competing with me. I do have other qualifications that I've been busy obtaining so I can diversify, but its still upsetting to get an email like that when I hiad spent time tailoring the CV and I am deliberately only applying for jobs where I feel I am a strong candidate. It completey sucks and scares me as I only have 3 montsh notice and what if I dont find anything by then? I have disabilities too so even less of an attractive candidate to employers.

Sorry just wanted to get it off my chest.

Try an industry that is more in need of people.

Genuinely interested what industries need more people?

Also I worry even if there’s less competition in other industries if it’s a complete 180 to my previous experience it will be just as hard to find a job.

Similar to what pp said, you need related experience to get experience

Construction has a massive skills gap but mainly in trades, so not much use to the average job hunter unless they can afford to do an apprenticeship.

Startingover25 · 18/06/2025 20:22

Keep going OP! I hope you find something soon.

I was made redundant at the beginning of the year. I had no interviews lined up after three months of searching. I had similar responses to you 'hundreds of applicants' etc. I was so disheartened. Suddenly, I then had three interviews lined up within a week of each other.

Are you speaking with recruitment consultants? Would any be able to give you feedback on a recent application? Also, if you're receiving JSA, would it be possible to get your CV reviewed?

cigarsmokingwoman · 19/06/2025 20:45

I'm doing absolutely everything people suggest 😢
I got another rejection today although they said my application was 'impressive'.

So sorry OP. It is soul destroying when you are doing everything people say and still not getting traction. You probably don't need any more advice but I have just received a job offer and this is my very individual experience.

Look at niche job boards: the one I've got wasn't advertised on Linkedin (apart from being shared by the staff) and I found it on a specialist publication website for that industry. Also jobs that have tailored application forms seem to bring a better response than sending a CV. Use your network - if you know someone at an organisation that is recruiting, get them to put you as an official recommendation. And always, always put a cover letter even if it's not mandatory. Don't be afraid of flattery and personalisation. Why do you want the job and why do you love what they do. I've worked for some prestigious, household name organisations and even they are not immune to compliments.

If you are working now, have you got money to hire a career or recruitment coach? That was going to be my next step. Also is your LinkedIn fully optimised - new pic, experience up to date, clear profile? God knows I hate LinkedIn and I do know people who get jobs without it (even in digital / tech) but it is the way of the world these days.

Sorry if this is all really basic and you are doing this already. It really is a shit job market but there are roles out there.

EasternStandard · 20/06/2025 16:07

Op can you say which area you work in, ie type of work you do?

Sorry to hear you were rejected again so hard.

Oohitsagoodpaper · 11/07/2025 13:49

How is everyone doing?
I’m getting flat out rejections for the jobs I actually want, and have had two interviews for jobs that I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about. Got rejection emails from them this morning.
I don’t know what else I can do. Feels pretty hopeless.
Hope some of you have had better luck.

Gottoloveatakeaway · 11/07/2025 13:59

I'm not sure how helpful this is, but I've just recruited to a new role and had 600 applications.

Key for me in sifting applications was a good cover letter, showing real interest and skills application to the specific role.
Also, evidence of experience is preferred to qualifications.

We recently advertised for a caretaker/site manager, £55K and house if wanted, got 2 applicants - one dropped out prior to interview.

Yes, I'm inclined to believe this statement above any other comments.

I started job hunting at Christmas, when my company did their first round of redundancies, they've now done a second round, and I have been very lucky to still be in a job. I am certain if they have a third round I will be out, so I need to find something before that happens. In that whole time I've not even managed to bag a single interview, and I am applying for at least one job a day. I have never ever had a problem finding a job before, or at least getting to the interview stage. I've reached out to recruiters I've worked with before, I write a great cover letter, tailor my cv, I have coached other people in the past through the recruitment process with huge success so it's not like I don't know what the moves are. But I have come up totally empty. It's so depressing and alarming.

It seems to me that the job hunting world has changed, massively and suddenly, in a horrifying way. My linkedin feed is full of depressed recruiters admonishing employers for overlooking great candidates, or pulling job adverts, or having stupidly long recruitment processes for basic level jobs. Everyone seems to hate AI. And so so many people in my network are open for work.

Yes, I'm inclined to believe this statement above any other comments.

Why?

TeenLifeMum · 11/07/2025 17:46

The job market is hideous. The last job I advertised I had to trawl through 160 applications and I’d say 80% were AI (so many similarities in the sentence structure and how they read. You’re competing against machines.
