I've seen an EOI position which takes my interest but never done one before so not sure of how it works
Do i need to get my line managers approval to apply or is it a case of just telling them i'm applying and cc them into application email
Also is it recommended to reach out to the contact in advance of applying to discuss role?

Ask your LM first in case they wouldn’t agree to release you.

Definitely speak to your LM as they will have to be comfortable with taking the gap in their team if you were successful. You will also want to check that your current role remains open for you once the secondment finishes.

always reach out to the point of contact to discuss the role first (as you should with any role you’re interested in) and have some questions ready to ask them.

In my department you have to have line manager agreement to apply for EOIs, the form explicit asks you to confirm this. Depending on how long the EOI lasts for, I would also want to confirm what happens to you when it ends (do you go back to your old team/directorate? are you expected to find a new job?). In my department, again the EOI advert tells you this.

Definitely fine to reach out to the recruiting manager, I always recommend doing this.
