My son is about to apply with an agency for a warehouse position the recruitment agency looks legitimate but they have asked for his passport and proof of address before a interview or even saying he has a chance of an interview. Is this the norm now, feel a bit uncomfortable with sending all this personal information with no guarantee of an interview.

From what I remember from years ago is that when people do agency work, they’re employed by the agency, not the company he will work at, so with the agency being the employer so to speak, they will need to check he is legally allowed to work in the UK and this is usually done by taking copies of passport. If the job is to be employed directly by the company and the agency’s role is to set up the interview, again, I think they would do the legal to work checks as they’d be a pretty shit agency if they sent people not legally allowed to work for interviews. If I was the recruiting company and the agency did that, I’d be pretty miffed!

Can you tell us who the agency is? Have you done due diligence on them? Checked companies house? Haven’t they sent out a T&Cs document with their type of info explained?

Yes, it's the norm for an agency to check right to work in the UK before they introduce a candidate to one of their clients.
They won't want to risk the client selecting your ds for an interview or contract and then discovering he has no right to work here.

Yep totally normal they have to verify right to work in the UK. The fines for businesses if caught having people without right to work are VERY high! I think they can face prosecution too.
