Summer dresses

Hi ladies, would love to know where everyone's buying summer dresses for corporate environment? Seem to have lost my way a bit and just can't find anything. I'd rather not wear Hobbs as I can no longer afford it. Have considered a personal shop session with John Lewis but part of me can't be arsed with it.

Tesco or Sainsbury's for work

Current summer trends aren’t great for work.

it’s all embroidery and very 70s hippy/nature style.
if you can rock a 50s look there are a lot of online places that sell that style dresses in anything from size 8 to 24.

i saw quite a few jumpsuits around last year including a lovely one in navy which I wound up not buying but if there’s anything like that could be good.

ChillWith · 01/06/2025 12:13

@Maddy70 thank you. Will have a look.
@Octavia64 thank you. Not worried about current trends more comfort and coolness as no air conditioning but jumpsuits are a good shout. Will have a look.

I've just picked up 3 dresses which I really like from George at Asda. This is one of them:

https://direct.asda.com/george/women/dresses/blue-leaf-bow-front-airflow-midi-dress/GEM1279379,default,pd.html?cgid=D1M1G20C1

But I thought there was a really good selection. My work is pretty casual so I may have had more to choose from, but worth a look!

Dress selections are awful at the moment. Horrible massive prints, colours mainly blue, white and black, very few alternative colours, all recycled plastic, shapeless voluminous tents, billowing mutton sleeves….its like they are all coming from the same factory. High end are better fabric-wise but the printed patters are as dire as the cheaper alternatives

DogSaidWoof · 01/06/2025 15:19

Sainsbury’s has some decent shirt dresses at the moment

Hdpr · 01/06/2025 15:24

Cos for simple cotton dresses

If you are a big-boned giant, otherwise you might as well wrap a tent around you.

EspanaPorfavor · 01/06/2025 15:47

Zara has some nice shirt dresses and linen midi dresses

WinterCarlisle · 01/06/2025 16:05

Another vote for Sainsbury’s dresses. They’re decent quality and excellent value

I bought some nice dresses from White Stuff. Shirt dress/tea dress styles, but made from decent weight jersey fabric so they don't crease and they hang well. Not polyester (yuck). Very pleased with them. Oh, and they have pockets!

CakeIsNotAvailable · 01/06/2025 17:25

I'd get on Vinted - brands I'd look for include The Fold, Me & Em, Wyse, Cefinn, Joseph, Gerard Darel, Winser, Theory, and some stuff by YMC (though a lot of it is too casual for work).

If you'd prefer to buy new, as well as checking out supermarket ranges, I'd go into M&S - I got a lovely 100% cotton summer dress from there last month, which I've worn to work (no low neckline etc).

Any links?

I’m 160cms and 56kg and pretty much exclusively wear Cos for work! Nobody has tried to slip under my dress with a trangia and sleeping bag.

ChillWith · 02/06/2025 06:53

Thanks everyone. Some good suggestions

I bought two of these for work - cotton, pockets, flattering shape and plain black (but if you search Meghan dress they have it in loads of colours)

This colour also good for work:

I’ve been very impressed with the quality of Oliver Bonas dresses that I bought the last two years. They have a few summer dresses in the Sale too. I like for work because some of the designs have a bit of a sleeve, not too low cut.

I'm 5 foot 2, size 12 and have loads of Co's dresses for work. Cos is ace.

I'm 5ft7 size 14 and yes feel like I'm wearing a tent in Cos. Have tried so many times, always enormous baggy clothing

dottydodah · 02/06/2025 10:01

I like E bay ,lots of Monsoon dresses which I like. New but a good discount ,Also Seasalt has 20% off just now .Also good old M and S (should have their system in place by July I think)

JamieFraserskneewarmer · 02/06/2025 10:01

I picked up some complete bargains on Vinted for work - I like a tailored dress so only search for things like Hobbs, LK Bennett and Reiss. Have had a few "misses" at the cheaper end but super bargains for around the £30-£40 mark

Shetlands · 02/06/2025 14:58

For anyone looking for cotton summer dresses at bargain prices, take a look at the sale rail here: https://nomadsclothing.com/collections/sale-2

Sustainable fabrics but might not be suitable for a very formal workplace.
