Hello, just looking for some advice please.
Anyone who works in HR in a school on a 52 week contract, can I ask do you work the full summer holiday and all half terms etc? I’m just wondering how much work is actually completed during these times when the school is closed and most staff won’t be in?
Thank you!

Your contract will tell you how much annual leave you are entitled to. Either legal minimum 20 says +Bank Holidays or whatever enhanced package is being offered. I'd think HR would have work spread throughout year ie staff going on sick or maternity leave. Also if recruiting involved there would be work involved in August for new starters payroll to set up. I don't think you can assume that all school holidays are 'down tools' time.

I have a friend who has a non teaching 52 week job in a school, she has the worst of both worlds as she doesn't get teacher holidays but can only take leave outside term time and not in the last two weeks of August either. Suspect this varies school to school but do check.

She's certainly very busy in the holidays although not in HR - term time sounds to be chaos and holidays are catch up time.

Our secondary is ‘open’ five days a week day other than bank holidays. Teaching staff can go in and work outside of contact time. The office is open every day until 5.30.

Thanks for the replies and really interesting about the holiday allowances and when they can be taken, sounds like it could be very restrictive. Thanks again everyone.

I work in HR in schools all year round. I love having the quieter times during holidays when compared with the busy term times. Fair to say I’ve never run out of work!
