Applicant portals, any HR recruiters?

I know no one has a crystal ball but just looking for possible insights as feeling really deflated today. After applying for a role, I passed the first sift and was invited to an assessment center. The status 'assessment' was indicated against my application on the candidate portal (big organisation). Shortly after my assessment the status changed to 'interview' so I assumed I'd passed the assessment and would get an interview invite. Today got a thanks but no thanks email and the status has gone to 'application not progressing'. I have an application for another job within the same company and an invite to assessment for this in a few weeks. Could the 2nd application have influenced the first? Just confused why they might progress status from assessment to interview then not progressing application. I recently left a long term job so novice to the world of job applications etc. Any views welcome.

It could be that they had more people apply for the job you didn't get, or that you weren't a good fit, ,but that you are (at least at this stage) a good fit for the other position.

Hope that makes sense. Is there much difference between the two roles?

I understand why I might not get a role it's the application status roll forward and then back gave me a bit of false hope I suppose. Jobs are the same family group but active one more senior. I felt I had more chance with the rejected one!

It's possible that the status was incorrectly updated.
Also possible that they changed their minds if they ended up with too many candidates to interview, so they re-reviewed the candidates and updated the statistics of candidates they changed their minds about. Not ideal, of course.

The ATS we use allows for both if these scenarios.
Although in reality, we would not update anyone's status to applicant's status to "interview" unless we were actually definitely going to interview, the system would technically allow us to do this.
