Had a job interview few days ago for a job I really really wanted.
today they called and told me they were very impressed and it was between me and another person however the other person had more experience. Told me they personally wanted to call me and me not to just receive an email. Asked to keep my details on file
literally gutted - it’s been a rough year work wise, was bullied out of a job and currently temping

Ah so sorry @Vera87 I was in a somewhat similar situation last year - I’d left a job that was making me miserable, moved onto another job that was pretty awful and was then a very close runner-up for another job.

I’d just about given up and accepted that I had to stick with the pretty awful job, as I was sick of job-hunting, when out of the blue I was head-hunted for another job, which was pretty much handed to me on a plate. I’m very happy in my new job, minimal stress, nice colleagues and managers who appreciate me - I want to give you hope that it is possible!

Allow yourself a short time of disappointment, that’s completely natural.
Then pick yourself up and take a confidence boost from the positive feedback.
Did they tell you what area of experience the other person had that you don’t? Find a way to get that - ask to shadow someone else, find a mentor, etc.
Getting a job is often a numbers game. You are obviously good enough, they were impressed with you. Just keep applying.

I’ll be okay but it was an unusual role one of a kind

That hard work wasn’t wasted though. It got you to the point of knowing you can do well in an interview. And if you are applying for similar jobs the preparation will be half done next time.
Be proud of yourself for doing well.

i I ended up getting the job three weeks later they called and created a post for me
