Commute for part time job

Hi!

I do appreciate this is a bit of a odd question, that really is dependent on how much you’re bothered, mode of transport etc. However I’d appreciate any responses!

Those of you who work part time hours, how far would you be happy to commute? As an example, if you worked 20 hours over 3 days.

I’ve been asked to changed my work location, and I’m not happy about it. As far as I’m concerned I’ve been asked and not told (it wouldn’t mean I couldn’t do my job) and I’ve got the weekend to prepare my response.

For clarity I won’t be able to claim expenses so will be out of pocket.

Im interested to see how far others are happy to travel?

Thank you!

45 mins each way maybe?

In 1 of my jobs I work 3 days, so 22.5 hours over 3 days. My commute is usually 40 mins (walk, train, walk) with some wfh days. It can be up to 1hr15 but that's not too often. I used to do 1h-1h15 for 3 days a week but glad I don't have to any more.

20 hours over 3 days is close to 7 hours a day, so pretty much full time days. As a result I don't see any real difference compared to someone full time. It is more weighing up the cost and time of commute versus what you get paid and your alternatives.

I am not sure what you could say to convince them.

If you aren’t happy and it’s a request and your contract doesn’t allow for it then say no.

If you say no what are the potential consequences?

why aren’t you happy with it? Could you do it one day and not two as a compromise?

GalantMiner · 15/05/2025 18:41

If it’s full days then I don’t see any difference to a full time employee. So I would say up to 1 hour each way, which I’ve done before for a job 3 full days.
It would be different if you were working 4 or 5 hour days, you wouldn’t want a long or expensive commute for those hours.

It’s a fairly low paid job and I’ll be going from being able to expense my travel to not.

Currently I work in different locations every day, so commute changes can be zero if I’m at home, 10 mins if I’m local to 30 mins to the furthest spot.

This request is to work at our main head office which is a 2 hour round trip on notoriously shitty roads.

The job was advertised as being local to me, they specifically wanted someone who lived in my area, but I do appreciate things change!

I was just interested to see where others would drawer the line

@familyissues12345 if that’s a change to contract they can’t enforce it. That’s a big change to your working. I’d seek some professional advice on that.
