Returning to work in different role after mat leave as can’t make role part time

I work for a large corp & when I’m returning to work from Mat leave I’m requesting to go part time. They won’t make my role part time so offering me a new role which is a few steps down so I will lose my company car etc. obviously I am grateful they are accommodating my new circumstances, but should I just accept losing my other benefits as it’s not my fault they can’t make my current role part time?

You can have your old job, you just can't have it part time

What reason have they given for refusing your request?

How part time are you wanting? If you’re thinking about 4 days it might work better financially to return full time, use a days holiday each week and then use parental leave to take a couple of weeks off in the summer for a holiday.
It won’t quite do a full year but if you’ve accrued some on holiday plus your partner covers a few you can probably get a full year and then reassess.

In the same vane it’s not their fault you want part time
like @Ceskasays you can have your old job back , just not part time. How part time are you talking? 3 days or less?
sounds like you were at a high level before

You are lucky that they offer you an alternative. In my company in our department is full time or nothing.
