Been supply teaching secondary science & maths latterly primary for some years & fed up of 7 am calls periods of no work, no stability or holiday sick pay.

supply was affecting my MH so applied to civil service & got a perm ao role. Im really excited by this change. Someone said to me I’ve undersold myself!

I’m mid 50’s and did not want to be in supply schools getting any older trying to get supply roles with etc teachers young enough to be my daughter or son.

Have I made a mistake and is the progression to at least eo role.

just wondering

thanks

I’ve just started a job with the CS. Pension and flexi-time is great and they’re keen for you to progress upwards. 😃

I’d be surprised if it was a mistake!

Good luck!

To progress you generally have to apply for an eo position but it is steady if not the most exciting type of work.

Thanks for kind response.

I was feeling doubtful that the ao job was really the starting point for me but looking at it, at mid 50’s I’ve moved into a role with greater stability than I had so it really is a lottery win when stacked up against all the issues supply teaching throws at you.

Is it hard to move from an ao to an eo and what is the usual timeframe. Do you need qualifications as I’ve got my first degree biochem x3 masters degrees, PGCE etc etc etc - not boasting here but really nervous scared and excited all at same time that it will be ok. At least my Mh will be better outside teaching I’d had enough.

It is based on meeting the behaviours so you need relevant experience to illustrate that. AO is low entry point for graduates though so you may find you can identify a suitable opportunity to progress. Time frames will vary though.
