I sent a not fit to work note to my boss yesterday. I haven’t had any acknowledgment of this. Is that strange?

Why not just email your boss and ask for an acknowledgment

TimeSquare · 24/04/2025 18:22

The note was for a significant period of time off due to a mental health crisis I am currently experiencing. Shall I email them to ask for an acknowledgment or do you think they should have acknowledged it or will acknowledge it. Sorry I am very anxious and unsure

I would send a follow up email asking for them to acknowledge receipt of it.

I’d totally expect your manager to acknowledge it without prompting though!

They should acknowledge it however if there is a sickness absence policy where you should call in to provide an update.
Alternatively your manager maybe in Leave or off sick perhaps ?

Thanks for your replies. I emailed this morning to request a reply and to ask how they wish me to stay in touch during this period. There is a policy that you have to phone in each day when you are sick usually, should I do that even though I have sent the fit note and asked how to stay in touch and they have not responded? Or should I wait for a response

Have you been off before, and the gp note is after 5 days self cert?

If not I would have called at the point of sending the note - if the policy is to call them you should do that and explain that the gp has signed you off for x weeks, and then enquire about contact requirements.

Seems risky just to have emailed in a sick note for a long term absence without speaking to your line manager.

If you’ve sent in a sick note you don’t need to call in daily (imo). Your line manager should have acknowledged the fit note - it’s pretty poor that they didn’t (even to say thanks for sending that, Hope you’re on the mend soon).
The only other thing I’d do is get in touch with them a few days before your fit note runs out and give them an idea of whether you’ll be back or if you’ll need more time off.

No you don’t need to call every day to update them if you have submitted a Fit note. Your GP has told them you are not fit enough for work for X weeks.
Hopefully your manager will reply to your email to confirm receipt of it and they can advise then if you need to keep in touch during your absence, but that might just be a brief call every couple of weeks to see how you are.

Hope you feel better soon
