How best to put forward a case for promotion

So I have a meeting with my boss on Friday - I believe I have a very strong case for promotion to the next level, I'm already doing work at the higher level. I also know that it is the pipeline for me to get a higher level role.. but I want to have the conversation about timeline and put forward a strong case for it happening sooner rather then later...

I've already collected evidence for show everything Ive been doing at a higher level role but what's the best way to approach the conversation?

Do you have an expectation framework or something your work use for assessing levels?

I don’t have a formal expectation framework, but I’ve been keeping track of my accomplishments and how they align with the responsibilities of the higher role. I think I’ll highlight specific projects and results during the meeting to demonstrate my readiness.

There's no formal framework as such- but typically those at a higher level take more complex cases, which I've been doing for several months, I've also been mentoring new starts which again is what expected of those at a higher level

Do you have objectives and/or behaviours/values to align to? Make sure you cover both the "what" and the "how" as there will likely be different expectations on the "how" for different levels too

Give your manager a heads up before the meeting so that they can also prepare and you make the best use of the time. You don't want to set out your stall and then in response they say oh I need to go away and read up on XYZ with HR etc.

Position it such that you want to discuss your development and promotion path, and you'd like to come away from the meeting with clear understanding of the process and what both your expectations are in terms of deliverables and timelines.

So I had the conversation and my boss agreed with me but that it would need to be approved by the CEO, it's now all approved so I'm officially being promoted 🎉
