Redundancy whilst on mat leave - what would you do?

I’ve been made redundant whilst on mat leave and cannot decide what to do. I would love to get people’s opinions on what they would do and why.

Firstly I put in a flexible working request to return 3 days a week (instead of 5) and if possible WFH 2 days instead of 1. We were hoping to try for another baby at the end of this year so had in mind returning to work would mean I’d get the enhanced mat pay again. I was however informed my role was being made redundant and was given two alternative ‘suitable’ roles.

  1. A step up role, on a 6 month trial (if the company feels it’s not working they would make me redundant then), no flexibility to go part time - 5 days & 3 days in the office.
  2. A step down role - a big step down, no flexibility to go part time - 5 days & 5 days in the office!

Firstly haven’t been given any flexibility at all and it’s actually a lot less flexibility to what I was doing in my current role! I’m worse off. Wouldn’t even mind a 4 day job but they won’t even allow that for either of the roles. I’m waiting to hear what my redundancy package would look like if I was to take that.

What would you guys do? Even if I take the redundancy and start a new job I still wouldn’t be eligible for any enhanced mat pay if I was lucky enough to fall pregnant quickly as I wouldn’t have been in the new job for long enough. Take one of the roles, suck it up hopefully for only a few months and hope to fall pregnant again soon so you know you’re off again soon.

Taking the step up and looking to get pregnant quickly would maximize your maternity pay, presumably it comes with a payrise. Could you take your annual leave so you're working 3/4 days for a while or will they make you take it before you return?

I asked this about my annual leave as I’ve got so much to use when I return from my mat leave I thought about also using it that way. I’ve already been told it would be subject to the teams AL, so they can’t promise me anything.

i think this is the more favourable option if I was lucky enough to fall pregnant again quickly. And even if I was to be made redundant after 6 months instead at least I would also have some pay set aside.

I would go for a step up and start TTC asap. Whatever happens in 6 months’ time I would worry about it then.

Take the promotion. Your DH reduces his hours and then reassess after your next maternity leave.
