Reduction in hours, they can’t do this can they?

I’m going down to 4 days a week, I only work 5 hours on Friday so I’m getting 2 hours back by starting earlier Monday to Thursday, therefore losing 3 hours a week

Someone has just told me that it doesn’t work like that and they’ll divide my pay by 5 and I’ll lose a fifth, I can’t afford to do that 😬

That can’t be right can it? I can’t get hold of wages to ask and I’m in panic mode!

Are you paid hourly or salaried? It's hard to tell and will depend on your contract I think.

Surly you paid by the hour . So you only lose 3 hours

BleachedJumper · 10/04/2025 15:24

Who is this someone? A nosy neighbour?

Most people are contracted to hours/days. If you will actually be going from 37 hours to 34, then I’d assume you’d be pro rata of your original 37 hours full time (divide your salary by 37, then multiply by 34)

turkeyboots · 10/04/2025 15:25

Did you ask for a 4 day week, or a drop of 3 hours? If you asked for 4 days, and didnt explain the additional 2 hours, I can see how that would cause confusion.

Depends on your contract. Check what you have agreed to

TeapotCollection · 10/04/2025 15:32

I’m salaried I think

My request specifically said that I want to do X hours instead of Y and lose 3 hours a week

‘Someone’ is a person who works down the corridor, workshop manager

That sounds like half a day rather than a day. What's been agreed in writing?

MiddleAgedDread · 10/04/2025 15:35

It should be pro-rated to the hours you work. We had someone who worked 4 shorter days, equivalent to just over 3 full days, to accommodate childcare but that didn't mean she got 80% of FTE!
