Sick note - how much notice?

If you had a sick note but still weren’t well enough to return to work when it ended, how much notice should you give work that you were hoping to extend it?

The local GP surgery refuse to review/extend the sick note until the old one has run out, so you can’t give work a definite answer on whether or not it would be extended.

Tell them now. Then give new cert when it's available. If you happen to be able to go back without needing a new cert then no issue.

I would tell them during the final week of the sick note that I have another GP appointment booked and will be getting another note

I would tell them straight away that you are looking to extend your fitnote so that they are aware

Tell them now that you’re still not well and will be calling your GP in the morning to get a new fit note

It depends when the note runs out. If you got a note for 4 weeks and you would be due back to work next Monday then I would tell them now. But if this is only week 3 then your employer and GP would likely feel this is too early to make that decision

That's what I meant. Tell them straight away if you're extending your fitnote. So yes on the day it runs out
