Am I being picky?

Announcement came through last weeks and I’ve been thinking about it
Mat leave has increased, great
2 grand bonus on returning from mat leave now

We used to get extra holiday hours for if we had worked there a long time. Nope, they’ve gone
do we get a pay rise for long service? Nope
anything at all? Nope. All gone

So I have lost 5 days annual leave which doesn’t seem much but it’s a min wage job. They’ve said now everyone gets the same amount but where’s the incentive to stay?
I might be a bit tetchy as I can’t have DC just if you’re posting in reply
the majority of staff I would say are older and it’s quite a male dominated business

Most employers adapt their strategies where it is needed for the business, they clearly don’t have an issue with staff retention generally (or if they do, they don’t care about losing people) so no incentive for them to be out of pocket to keep people they aren’t bothered about losing

You would think that but they have a massive staff retention issue… we’ve brought it up before
generally if they recruit 3 people, 1 won’t pass probation, another leaves within a year and possibly number 3 might stay

Removing the extra long service holidays from people who already ‘earned’ them is shitty. It’s one thing to draw a line under it and say no more, but I’d be pissed off to lose 5 days I was counting on, too.

As part of tackling the retention issue, they are encouraging experienced people to come back after mat leave. That sounds like a good idea. Probably people will say something had to be removed elsewhere to cover the new bonus, but unless you have dozens of mat returners every year, I’d imagine it costs more than a few extra days’ holiday here and there.

Then it’s the other option I mentioned- they don’t care about losing those people.

Plus, if they’ve only just removed these things and staff retention was already an issue then it suggests it wasn’t helping keep staff anyway so a waste of money for the business.

2 grand bonus fur returning from Mat Leave ???? Wow.

BackToRealitySigh · 31/03/2025 21:06

Have they bought out your contractual benefit of the 5 days long service holiday?
You can change things going forwards for new starters etc but if current staff have X days contractually they can't just change policy and cut them.
If so do you have option to buy holiday back?

Well apparently people have been a lot more.. vocal than me about it and there will be an email coming out tomorrow
they have now said we will keep the extra holiday but anyone joining from now won’t get the long service extra holiday which seems much fairer
From the message I got tonight it seems the announcement got a pretty.. drastic reaction Blush
