What does this mean after an interview?

Currently doing a placement. They had some jobs going so I applied. They put up 2 vacancies for the same job. Separate reference numbers. I was told to apply for both so I could be considered for both posts but I only need to interview once.

I had my interview last week. Got told today that I’ve been unsuccessful in the first post but they said I’m ‘at the top of the pile’ for the next round.

what does this mean? As far as I know they’re still doing interviews for the second vacancy. I don’t want to get my hopes up but I don’t want to be disappointed either

Presumably, it means you're "top of the pile" for the second post, if you're taking it at face value.

In practice, it means nothing at all until they offer you a job.
