Ideas for an accountant - what to retrain as ?

Inspired by a recent thread on feeling unfulfilled by the job you are in, I would love to re-train or apply my finance / accounting skills in a different field. I would happily take a significant pay cut if it meant feeling more fulfilled . To summarise, I :

  • hold a respected accountancy qualification
  • have 20+ years in finance working for a range of companies and industries
  • am grateful to have had this career but am now in a position where i can consider a step down , work for less pay and hopefully reduce hours too.
  • love working with people, also have DC and have worked abroad .
  • would like to use my finance /accounting skills in a different way or in a new field.

I am open to any ideas especially from anyone with a finance background and / or accountancy qualification . Has anyone moved from the corporate world to something different and more fulfilling ? Or does anyone have a similar feeling ? Or do you already have that dream career move planned out ?

This is very random as I'm not an accountant but a colleague of mine in a health care job left to set up a new branch of Christians Against Poverty. If I were going to do the same I would go for Step Change as I'm an atheist. I should think your skills and experience would be great in a role like that helping people get to a point of managing debt and back to financial stability.

There are lots of things you can do in government with finance skills.

I was an accountant at a university, and am now a student money advisor at the university. A lot less pay and hours but feels more worthwhile.
Longer term I will probably train in more wide money guidance so I can work / volunteer in other settings.

Do you work term time? I don’t hate my job and it has provided well financially; but it doesn’t excite me either.

Financial investigators NCA / Police / civil service
insurance and risk - loads of jobs, good money in professional indemnity and D & O for someone who gets a balance sheet. Charter exam first level is quite easy for someone with your skills

Retraining as company secretary and find role or register with from like finance doctor and work for yourself.

insolvency work - tons of it right now and every day is different!

Yes I work term time, 3 days a week. Luckily husband happy to keep me. I have only been in role for 7 weeks and am enjoying so far.

There is a mixture in our team - a full timer and a part timer who work year round and me.

A friend moved from accounting and became a bursar - she loved it - every day was different.

This is a really helpful thread I’ve been looking at doing the AAT course and it’s good seeing other ideas of what you could do with it and the experience I have.

I'm one of three former accountants teaching in my primary school.
