Is this discrimination? Maternity leave/ promotion

“You only came back [from maternity leave] in September, and there has to have been half a year before you can be put forward for promotion.”

Said by my manager at most recent annual review. Promotion cycles only take place once a year at my company.

I genuinely don’t know so open to hearing either way.

Companies will have different policies, I have seen places where you needed 6 months (or even a year) active in a role ahead of consideration for promotion

Yes, that sounds like unlawful maternity discrimination. You cannot be denied promotion opportunities or have promotion delayed just because you were on maternity leave. If you want to know for certain, you need to consult a lawyer who specialises in employment law. If your home insurance includes legal cover, they may be able to help.
