Being aware of the human rights issues, are there any single working women on here based in RSA. What's the life really like? Considering applying for a role based out there.

I live in Riyadh and know plenty of single ladies living here very happily. For my career it has been a great experience. Many live on western compounds, but more of us are choosing to life in complexes off compound with pools and gyms. Similar to the UAE. Nearly all areas of life are accessible to westerners and the Saudi's I have got to know are wonderful hospitable people who are so proud of their country. Good companies will offer a good orientation package.

Not directly, but my friends daughter is a teacher and went out for a year because in a year she could earn enough to top up her savings to put down a deposit on a house. That was 4 years ago! She loves it, and it won't be long before she can buy a very nice house outright if she wants to. My friend goes out to visit regularly and she says as above - her daughter has a lovely lifestyle, has many friends, and fantastic facilities.

And quite seperately from that I have worked in areas which have poor human rights issues - many far worse than Saudi Arabia. Because of the type of work I did it was unavoidable. It can be uncomfortable to "turn a blind eye" to things that you would perhaps speak up about in the UK (and many people don't speak up about stuff that is wrong in the UK!) But the world changes. Slowly admittedly, and sometimes in the wrong direction. However I think that the more we see of people who aren't like us, and the more they see of us, the better we understand each other, the more change happens, and sometimes we also understand that there is more that we have in common than that which divides us.

Go for it - you haven't even been offered the job yet, but if you are it could be a great experience. And like any job - if you don't like it you don't hae to stay forever.
