Apply for two different jobs ar same university?

DS (fairly recent graduate) has applied for an admin job at a university. Not heard anything, but applied quite recently, so it's still possible that his application is being considered. Has now seen another job at the same university (different department) that also looks good. But wondering whether having two different job applications in at the same time could work against him. Does anyone have any thoughts? Particularly interested to hear from anyone who has experience of recruitment at a university.

I don't work in university but work for the council- do it! If it is different departments they may not even notice. Of course he won't be applying for just one job at a time. And if anything it shows he is interested in working for that particular employer.

I have no experience of admin jobs in a university but it's normal practice for academics to apply for multiple jobs. I interviewed for 2 jobs in different departments when I started. Several others did the same. I can't imagine it would work against him.

Thanks both for the advice. Sounds like he should definitely apply for the second job.

The hiring managers wouldn't know he applied for both, and if they somehow find out - it won't count against him. We have seen it before.

I work at a uni and have done recruitment there. Definitely fine to apply for both - where I work it’s usually viewed as a positive thing as it shows the applicant is keen on working at the uni. It may not be noticed though if it’s totally separate departments. He just needs to make sure he tailors each application carefully to the specific role and doesn’t just totally copy and paste. I’ve had applications where they’ve included the wrong job title as they’ve copied and pasted text from another application!

Apply for both.

Apply for both. Very very unlikely it would be noticed. If it is it won’t be an issue. Uni cuts mean lots of applicants for each job atm.
