Stagnation in role

I took a side step to the position I am currently in to get a leg up to the next level/grade. Two years on and I haven’t moved forward. I have learned other sought after and relevant skills but not the skills I specifically asked for and was promised at interview. It is always dangled as a carrot on a stick but the carrot ain’t getting any closer. I’ve just had an annual review and brought this up but still just the carrot dangling just out of reach. I have tried many tactics to bring this to a conclusion and have a mentor but it feels like a misstep in my career. On paper it’s okay but personally is another matter entirely.

I interviewed for a different company a few months ago but they too just wanted to offer the carrot and I’m too nervous about falling into the same trap again and compounding the issue.

Any advice please? Probably worth saying I’m mid career so the early career trajectory suddenly coming to a halt could be compounding the issue. It feels like a bit of a Wednesday in my career. I’ve definitely got more to give and go.

Well, it might be the same trap but no way of knowing until you try it! It looks like it's definitely not happening where you are so I'd take the gamble.

Go and get it then. Either from your current employer (whats the current barrier?) or by getting a new role.

I've stayed too long in previous roles and when I look back I can't believe I did it.

You're in control here. Remember that.

Would a man take another role that’s lower? I read the CV of a man they brought in from outside of the organisation and it’s pure fantasy! It’s not a sexist organisation either but I could definitely do with bullshitting more about myself.

I do unfortunately think I need to leave so thanks for a bit of a push!

Current barrier is inexplicably cloudy. I’ve come to the realisation that my face just doesn’t fit. No matter what I prove I can do it’ll never be enough.

Thanks for the reminder that I have the power or choice.
