Redundant mid 50s

Name changed for this one.

Was made redundant at the end of last year from a senior corporate role. Very glad to get out at the time as my boss was ineffective and I was not happy. I'm 55. Thought I'd have a couple of months off and then start to look for another job, which is what I'm doing now. The job market is a NIGHTMARE!

I'm having an identity crisis where I can't decide if I get a PT job for the next few years and start to take my private pension to top things up, or if I want another full-on corporate role. I interviewed for a job for which I had all the right experience, and I thought it went well, but soul destroyingly I haven't heard back in over a week. I honestly thought I'd get called back but... Nothing. I don't think I have the resilience to do this over and over when I will probably lose out to someone younger.

Pension pot is about £350k with a small final salary pension due to be paid out at 60. DH still working and well paid, and has said we will work something out if I don't want to go back to FT work. We still have a mortgage to pay for the next 4 years.

WWYD? I'm overthinking this all to the nth degree at the moment.

It sounds like you are putting yourself under a lot of pressure. Interim jobs are a great way to get a foot in the door.

Id stop thinking about it all being so hard and a difficult market as a starter. At the end of the day, you just need one job and the right thing will come up.

@Firsttimeinmylife I wouldn't delay looking if I were you. Job market is awful right now - flooded with people on the job market.

Sorry to hear this. So stressful

Yes I am looking! Will hear on Wednesday next week outcome on consultation! A load of folk are going so I can’t say I’ll be spared! I was annoyed last week as got told I’d get a screening interview! It was cancelled and told another recruiter would be in touch! Then they rejected me without any interview at all! Only two years ago I had a great hit rate with interviews! Hope you all have good news next week!

If anyone is still interested, the role I applied for has gone to 3rd interview. Another week of angst!!

Well done making it through, but I do get annoyed at these companies that have multiple interview rounds. They should absolutely know if they want a candidate or not after two interviews.

wtftodowithmylife · 01/03/2025 14:30

@rookiemere I agree, was slightly frustrated as when I took the call I expected it to beat decision. I think they can't decide between me and the other candidate.

Good luck! Watching with interest as about to find out whether I have a job (mid 50s, senior FS). Thankfully in a reasonable financial situation but can't be sure retirement is right for me just yet.

wtftodowithmylife · 04/03/2025 07:59

Thanks, I'll report back. Not gonna lie, the job market is tough at the moment with lots of competition. But I was told by a friend at the weekend that I've done brilliantly just by landing two interviews from the 25ish jobs I've applied for. Which is all well and good but landing interviews doesn't pay me anything!

First week of job hunting. 3 days of interviews in a row. Got a F2F in 2 weeks! Exhausted already! Good luck with the interviews!

blueshoes · 05/03/2025 00:38

All the best with your interviews @wtftodowithmylife @Firsttimeinmylife @Onemorestepintheworld. Hope it is good news soon. Flowers

wtftodowithmylife · 09/03/2025 15:11

Losing the will to live with the role I'm interviewing for. Three interviews across three weeks, the last one was on Wednesday. Chased the recruiter Friday afternoon and was told they hadn't made a decision yet. Am I being too impatient? Feel like it's taken over my life for the last few weeks. The thought of starting all over again if I going get this one is horrifying.

EBearhug · 09/03/2025 15:24

It seems normal. Apparently the job I am 3 months into was between me and another, and it took them a couple of weeks to decide. The previous one, 6 months before, also took an age. It is tedious as anything.

Firsttimeinmylife · 09/03/2025 15:32

I had a rejection from one job. Awaiting to see if I’ve got a 3rd interview with another and have a F2F interview in 17th March. Applied to a load of others. One said I was overqualified so I went back saying I really wasn’t! Had a smattering of other rejections. I’m only one week in but hope will get something quickly so I can use the redundancy money as savings!
