I am the CEO and a director of 10-15 person company, with a boss who's the owner and no HR. I've been with the company for 10 years, good working relationship until now.

First child and I will be taking 12 months maternity and I want to return to work on a four-day schedule or condense my 5 days into 4. However, my boss has refused this request (no reason given) and instead offered me a manager role, removing my director title and CEO responsibilities.

I currently have 60 days of accrued holiday that I need to take before the end of the year. My boss has put a restriction on my holiday and said I can only take a few days in the first 3 months I'm back, meaning I have to cram my leave into half a year. He is now questioning whether I can effectively do my job in such a reduced timeframe...

To compromise, I suggested using my holiday to facilitate a four-day workweek, which would reduce the amount of leave I need to take. However, he rejected this solution.

What are your thoughts on this?
Thank you

Tricky. You have rights, but your work situation with an owner boss and no HR means there's no one in the business to support you. I suggest you have a chat with Pregnant and Screwed for some sound advice on how best to proceed. Good luck

Well hopefully you're in a union and can speak to your rep?

Although it seems hardly anyone bothers with unions on MN.
