Is anyone else in the same boat,; Ive had many jobs since graduating and can honestly can count on my hands the ones that had nice managers. I've had some crazy line managers, one who used to bully and shout at me to the point where she eventually got fired for harassment. One who was an ex heroin addict and who would just be out of the office all the time and not give me anything to do and more recently a manager who gets frustrated if I ask any questions ( I rarely ever do) she will just turn the question back on me, ignores me and is just super arrogant and occasionally shouts at me. I've tried very hard in all these jobs, I work hard and get good performance reviews, I'm not an idiot Ive got a degree. Colleagues seem to like me, so I don't get it why does it keep happening? I need to look for another job but I'm literally terrified of dealing with another type of crazy. Anyone else relate?

No not really but it sounds awful.

How did you know one was an ex heroin addict and how did her beaten addiction, affect her job?

I can relate. I have overcome it by moving to another department where I knew the manager was normal before I applied. Is that an option?

He told me when we were alone at the office one day. He said he couldn't sleep th night before and I said "oh that's rough" and then went on to tell me it's because he used to do heroin. It was hard to say how it affected his job but he def had some issues.

What types of jobs are you in?!

Have you tried going for public sector?

DoNotBringLulu · 08/02/2025 10:53

I sympathise OP. I never had a good manager. I don't know how these people get their jobs

Nooooo don't go into public sector as another post suggests. I worked for public sector for 33 years and treatment was no different than you describe, generally people in Management that are less qualified than you are, some not knowing what the specialist qualification was in our field. 50% of office related to each other causing bullying and stress should anything been questioned that goes against managements belief. Made to feel stupid and worthless in appraisals should targets not be met as it was all about numbers and not service provided. Sadly I think it's a case of finding a correct fit in a workplace where your expectations match

I feel the same. Terrible last 3 job experiences. A role where the manager hated the boss and was always having disagreements, one where young colleauges were openly prejudiced. My last one a team who refused to help with anything. Dreadful. the problem with work is people!!
