Can you demand your pay is 'broken down' on your payslip?

Newly taken over company, new payroll. Basically my payslip tells me 'cash earned' is 'x'; NI is 'y'; Tax is 'z'; pension is 'q'; so net pay is 'x' minus all these, but there is no breakdown of which hours earned what remuneration, which ones earned 'enhanced'.

Do I have a right to 'demand' that?

Cant you just "politely request" it like a professional and see how it goes?

Fordian · 03/02/2025 12:35

Unfortunately there is no one to request it from, politely or otherwise.

This is a company who only discovered they had to issue payslips to employees 3 months ago! I need to approach them with 'the law' on this.

They've outsourced the issuing of payslips to a third party, but I don't know if they are what you would call 'payroll' or just a 'printing service'.

Info from acas here: https://www.acas.org.uk/payslips . The precise info that must be recorded varies depending on factors such as whether you work different hours each week, and whether you do different types of work at different rates.

Who gets a payslip and what it must show.

Thanks for the ACAS link. This implies they should be breaking down my hours worked into differently remunerated periods, doesn't it?

Hi OP, yes if you’re not salaried or have worked OT hours or enhanced rates, these should be clearly displayed on your payslip. You mention payroll has been outsourced - the company it has been outsourced to is usually either displayed on your payslip itself or displayed on the email address the payslip comes from. I would suggest contacting the outsourcing company directly as they would be the ones generating the payslip.

Are you salaried or hourly paid?

VivX · 03/02/2025 15:54

If the payroll is outsourced, then they will be calculating the payroll.
But they will be doing it based in information from your employer.
So, if your employer just tells the payroll provider what the gross pay is, they might not have the breakdown to put on the payslip.

Anyway, just ask ask your employer for a breakdown (someone will be submitting the info the payroll provider).
This should be a 30 second email with no need for any drama (or demands) on either side.
